The Glass Barn framework was originally part of the village hall in nearby Salen, having been built on the Clyde in the early 1900's, it was taken down to make way for a new road and has been at Sgriob-ruadh for nearly 30 years now. The Reade's had been on Mull a few years and were gradually re-building the farm, and re-purposed the metal frame, bringing it back to life at the farm and adding in the glasswork.

Moving up from the warmer climates of Somerset, and being keen gardeners, the family originally wanted somewhere to grow plants, and even considered the space could be used to house calves, and store cheese in the winter if needed. An ornamental vine was planted in the glass barn those 30 years ago, which today covers every inch of the ceiling. Its Spring leaves allow light to peak through during the spring and summer months, creating a magical space for all to enjoy. The Glass Barn was run as a café by Shelagh and Shona Reade in the early years, had a number of varying purposes since, and re-opened as a seasonal café in 2015.

Today, if you're in the café around 3.30/4pm in the summer months, and the cows are in the front fields, you'll be able to sip your coffee and watch the cows saunter in for milking time.

Varied opening towards the end of July/ start of August 2026 - apologies for any inconvenience caused.
